Amazon Pours 100-Plus New Features Into Alexa for Shopping
Amazon added over 100 features to Alexa for Shopping, which 400 million customers used in the past year. Users spend 50% more per order, CEO Andy Jassy told analysts.

Amazon has added more than 100 new shopping capabilities to its Alexa for Shopping tool, the company announced in an Oct. 29 post. The figure matters because it signals where Amazon thinks the next fight for the checkout lives: inside the conversation.
The upgraded assistant now lets U.S. shoppers create and modify registries, manage subscriptions, change delivery instructions and handle billing and payments questions. Everything runs inside the Amazon Shopping app and on the web.
The scale is hard to ignore. Over 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the past 12 months, according to Amazon — roughly one in eight humans on the planet, though the company counts customers, not unique individuals. Amazon launched the shopping assistant in May, replacing its earlier Rufus assistant.
"Our vision for Alexa for Shopping is to make every part of shopping as convenient as possible," Rajiv Mehta, Amazon's vice president of conversational shopping, said in the blog post. "This is just the beginning. We're continuing to invent new ways to save customers time and make shopping even more personal."
Why the CEO is talking about it on earnings calls
Alexa for Shopping earned a mention in Amazon's third-quarter earnings, and the numbers explain why. Online store net sales rose 2% year over year to $68.5 billion, and physical store sales climbed at the same rate to $5.7 billion.
The kicker came from the top. "U.S. customers using Alexa for Shopping are spending 50% more per order than those who don't," Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told analysts during the Q3 earnings call. "Though we anticipate working with horizontal agents, we believe Alexa for Shopping is going to be the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon."
Read that twice. Amazon expects third-party, horizontal AI agents to exist, and it plans to outrun them anyway. That's a strategy, not a hope.
What does this change for the AI agent turf war?
Plenty. Amazon is already defending its storefront from rival agents. In September, the company asked Meta to remove Amazon's e-commerce site from the Muse AI agent experience, saying it received no advance notice of the integration and never granted permission.
The year before, Amazon took Perplexity to court after its Comet AI agent made purchases on consumers' behalf. The pattern is consistent: Amazon will sell through its own agent, on its own terms.
For brands and retailers watching from the sidelines, the practical question is simple — if Alexa becomes the default shopping interface for Amazon's most valuable customers, how does your product surface in a conversation rather than a search box? Amazon hasn't answered that yet. The 50% higher order value suggests it eventually will, and on its own timeline.
The 100-plus new functions arrive as adoption accelerates, per Amazon. Expect more. Mehta said as much, and Amazon rarely stops at "the beginning."
