  • The store will have around 120 fueling positions and bring 200 jobs.

Buc-ee's will break ground on a 74,000-square-foot store in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Nov. 9, the company announced last week. The location is slated to open in 2028.

The Lafayette store is one of two Buc-ee's sites in the works in the Pelican State. A second Louisiana location, in Ruston, is expected to open in 2027. Both projects advance a nationwide expansion that now includes stores under development in North Carolina and Georgia, according to the company.

The Texas-based convenience chain currently operates stores in 14 states, including Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia. Beyond Louisiana, North Carolina and Georgia, states with locations currently in the works include Idaho, Utah and Ohio.

What will the Lafayette store deliver?

The Lafayette location is expected to have around 120 fueling positions. That count has become the norm for the c-store operator's new sites, the company said.

The store is also expected to bring 200 jobs to the Lafayette area. Many of those positions pay above the average convenience store wage, according to the company.

How fast is Buc-ee's expanding beyond Texas?

Buc-ee's has pursued growth outside its home state of Texas since 2019. That expansion has accelerated over the past few years, based on the company's current development slate spanning at least eight states.

The retailer's stores are known for three draws: large footprints, clean bathrooms and a proprietary snacks and foodservice program. That program includes a Buc-ee's barbecue station and homemade fudge.

For marketers and retail observers, the chain's growth pattern shows how a differentiated in-store experience, rather than fuel alone, can anchor a multistate expansion strategy.

Why is Buc-ee's also in the headlines over mascots?

Not all of the company's recent attention concerns store openings. Buc-ee's has filed numerous lawsuits against competitors over their company mascots.

Ohio-based Mickey's recently settled with Buc-ee's, according to the source report. Litigation against two other defendants remains ongoing:

  • Teddy's Market
  • Hanes Road Carryout, parent company of Beaver's Mini Mart

The mascot disputes run parallel to the chain's physical growth. Both signal a company actively defending a brand identity that has fueled its expansion well beyond its Texas origins.

With Lafayette breaking ground Nov. 9, Ruston following in 2027 and additional sites moving in Idaho, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio and Georgia, Buc-ee's appears positioned to keep adding states through the end of the decade.
