At a glance

  • H-E-B store visits rose 6% year over year between January and August 2026, per Placer.ai, versus close to 1% average growth for grocery overall.
  • Existing H-E-B locations grew visits 2.6% year over year in the same period, compared with 0.1% for the rest of grocery.
  • Placer.ai attributes the growth partly to shopper engagement—longer visits and more frequent returns—plus localized assortments, community ties and amenities like True Texas BBQ.

H-E-B's store visits rose 6% year over year between January and August 2026, six times the growth rate of grocery overall, according to the latest research from Placer.ai. The finding puts the San Antonio-based grocer in a category of its own at a time when grocery store visits are averaging close to 1% year-over-year growth.

New store openings explain part of the surge. H-E-B has spent the last four years expanding around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and those additional doors add to the total visit count. But the expansion does not tell the whole story.

Existing H-E-B locations posted a 2.6% year-over-year increase in visits over the same January-to-August period, according to Placer.ai. The rest of the grocery category managed just 0.1%. That gap—more than 25 times the category norm—signals that shoppers are choosing H-E-B stores more often, not simply finding more of them.

Location analytics from Placer.ai suggest the visit growth is driven in part by strong shopper engagement. Customers at H-E-B stay longer in stores and return significantly more often than the category average. Those two behaviors compound: longer visits and higher return frequency both push traffic numbers upward without requiring new customers.

Placer.ai's research points to two drivers behind the engagement, one obvious and one that competitors may want to study. The obvious driver is expansion. The less obvious one is loyalty.

The chain's locally tailored assortments and strong community ties appear to sustain unusually strong customer loyalty, according to the research. H-E-B curates its product mix to fit the markets it serves rather than running a uniform assortment across all stores, and its community presence runs deeper than standard corporate sponsorship.

Beyond the shopping itself, in-store amenities add another reason to linger. True Texas BBQ restaurants, operating at a growing number of H-E-B locations, turn a grocery run into a destination stop. Each additional minute a shopper spends on site increases the odds of unplanned purchases, a dynamic that fits squarely with the longer dwell times Placer.ai observed.

For grocery marketers, the numbers frame a clear comparison. A 2.6% visit increase at existing stores against 0.1% for the category shows that assortment localization, community investment and experiential amenities can move traffic without relying on footprint growth alone.

The Placer.ai data covers January through August 2026 and compares year-over-year visit trends for H-E-B against the broader grocery category.

If H-E-B sustains its engagement-led growth alongside its Dallas-Fort Worth expansion, the grocer's visit numbers should keep widening the gap with a category that is barely growing at all.
