Louis Vuitton Americas Chief Lanessa Elrod Takes Over Bergdorf Goodman
Lanessa Elrod, ex-CEO of Louis Vuitton Americas, takes over as Bergdorf Goodman president Monday, replacing Tracy Margolies as the retailer marks 125 years.

Lanessa Elrod, until recently CEO of Louis Vuitton Americas, becomes president of Bergdorf Goodman on Monday, replacing Tracy Margolies after her two-year run. Parent company Exemplar Luxury Group announced the change Thursday.
Elrod isn't a stranger to the building. She has worked at every one of Exemplar's three full-line banners — Bergdorf, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus — and built her career as a luxury department store buyer. That history matters for a company that spent the past year fighting vendor disputes and a bankruptcy.
Why the swap reads as continuity
Bergdorf is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, and the appointment signals the retailer's dedication to institutional memory. Margolies isn't leaving entirely: she becomes executive adviser at Exemplar Luxury Group, reporting to CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck. She brought decades of merchandising experience from Bergdorf and Saks Fifth Avenue to the top job.
Writing about her return on LinkedIn, Elrod called it "a deeply special full-circle moment." In a statement, van Raemdonck said her return "marks an important step in advancing our strategic priorities and further strengthening Bergdorf's position as the pinnacle of luxury."
Standard corporate language, yes. But the subtext is that Bergdorf stayed largely above the fray while its sister banners bled.
What happened to the company around Bergdorf?
Exemplar, previously known as Saks Global, spent last year in turmoil after Saks acquired Neiman Marcus for $2.7 billion. Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus tussled with vendors over unpaid invoices and unconventional payment terms, while Bergdorf held its position as a luxury stalwart on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
The parent entered bankruptcy court in January and exited in June as Exemplar Luxury Group, having cut its debt by roughly 75%, to under $1 billion. For context, that means creditors forgave about three-quarters of what the company owed — a rare outcome in retail restructurings.
"Bergdorf's is just fine," Michael Appel, president of Appel Associates, said by phone. "If they ever have to sell an asset, they can sell Bergdorf's in a minute. If they're willing to sell the whole thing because I don't think anyone's going to buy a minority position in Bergdorf's."
That last remark cuts at a real question. Last year, analysts including Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Retail Equity Analyst Mary Ross Gilbert said they believed Saks Global was seeking a buyer for a 49% stake in Bergdorf Goodman. Holding a majority position would have let Saks fully integrate Bergdorf's results into its balance sheet and beef up its numbers, Gilbert said at the time.
Was Bergdorf really untouched?
Not entirely. Chief merchant Yumi Shin left for Nordstrom this year after Saks Global dropped its attempt to prevent her departure. So even the banner that "held on" lost talent to the chaos upstairs.
Still, Bergdorf enters its 126th year with a leader who knows the store, a parent with $1 billion less debt, and — for now — no confirmed minority-stake sale. Whether Elrod can turn continuity into growth at a retailer whose value may lie partly in being sold is the open question.
