Target completes SoHo revamp, refreshes 1,600-plus fan shops
Target has refreshed its SoHo store and updated more than 1,600 fan shops. Nearly 90% of fan gear costs less than $50 as analysts forecast 3% holiday comp growth.

At a glance
- More than 1,600 sports fan shops have been remodeled or newly installed.
- Target completed its SoHo store lower-level renovation last week.
- Nearly 90% of fan shop items cost less than $50.
- Telsey analysts estimate holiday comps will grow 3% year on year.
- Target’s prior-year Q4 net sales fell 1.5%, while comps declined nearly 4%.
More than 1,600 sports fan shops have been remodeled or newly installed ahead of the holidays, the retailer said Monday, with space and assortment at about double their previous levels.
Target said last week it had completed the renovation of the SoHo store’s lower level in New York City. Target unveiled the first phase nearly a year ago and said the renovation would continue to evolve this year.
What changed inside Target’s SoHo store?
In a press release, Target said: “The Fan Shops refresh puts two of Target’s enterprise priorities into action: leading with merchandising authority and elevating the guest experience.”
The fan shops carry local hometown team graphics and signs. Target said both the fan shops and SoHo store suit local tastes and demand.
Target said many of the New York spaces draw inspiration from the city. These include:
- The “Bullseye Loft,” dedicated to home goods, features “inspiring, shoppable living spaces.”
- Balance Mart features products for men’s grooming, wellness and Korean beauty.
- A snack bar “brings New York streetscapes inside,” inspired by neighborhood businesses and stocked with grab-and-go items from emerging brands like Wilde and Cadootz.
What does Target’s price investment mean for the holidays?
Target has again emphasized affordability, less than a week after saying customers would find thousands of gifts priced $5 or under this year. Nearly 90% of items at its fan gear shops cost less than $50, according to the retailer.
Jefferies analysts, led by Corey Tarlowe, linked the value push to stronger volumes in research last month. They said tariff refunds provide an opportunity “to further fund value initiatives,” creating a path “to stronger market share gains and upside to both sales and margins.”
Tarlowe said: “Target’s continued price investments reinforce our view that management is making the right decisions for the customer and the business.” He added: “Lower prices help drive value perception and volume gains, consistent with our recent store checks, while enhanced newness provides additional traffic drivers.”
What has changed under Michael Fiddelke?
Dive described Target as being in turnaround mode after losing much of its “cheap chic” cachet. Q4 will test the recovery.
Target enters Q4 on firmer ground than a year ago, when a series of quarterly declines weighed on its holiday performance. Target reported Q4 net sales down 1.5% and comparable sales down nearly 4% for that earlier period.
Under newly installed CEO Michael Fiddelke, Target has rehired fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi this year, added a new Beauty Studio store experience after its breakup with Ulta, and expanded its online marketplace.
What do analysts expect for the holidays?
Telsey Advisory Group analysts led by Dana Telsey estimate Target’s holiday comparable sales will grow 3% year on year.
In a Monday client note, Telsey said: “Target should be among the winners this holiday season ... as it continues its transformation and stays trendy by offering new products.”
The 3% estimate contrasts with the nearly 4% comparable-sales decline in the prior-year fourth quarter.
For Target, Q4 will test whether lower prices, new products and refreshed stores can deliver the 3% holiday comparable-sales growth Telsey expects.
