At a glance

  • Etsy published updated AI seller guidelines on Oct. 22, banning AI-generated functional guides such as patterns and recipes.
  • Every listing must now include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background.
  • Etsy ranks No. 20 in Digital Commerce 360's Global Online Marketplaces Database by third-party GMV.
  • Agentic AI experiences account for less than 1% of Etsy's traffic, CEO Kruti Goyal said in August.
  • Buyer reports of suspected AI listings won't trigger immediate enforcement; removal activity expands in coming months.

Etsy banned an entire category of AI-generated content on Oct. 22, targeting functional guides — patterns, recipes and instructions — in the marketplace's most aggressive move yet against low-effort AI listings.

The updated seller guidelines, published in Etsy's seller handbook, restrict specific categories of AI-generated content, tighten listing photo requirements and introduce new enforcement tools. Etsy frames the changes as a defense of buyer trust, which it says is eroding as AI-generated listings proliferate across the platform.

"AI should support your creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them," Etsy vice president of customer operations James Ossman wrote in the update. "Buyers should always be able to understand the role you play in every item you sell on Etsy."

For context on scale: Etsy ranks No. 20 in Digital Commerce 360's Global Online Marketplaces Database, which ranks the 100 largest marketplaces by third-party gross merchandise value.

What do the new rules require from sellers?

The categorical ban covers AI-generated functional guides. If a seller lists a pattern, recipe or set of instructions, the listing must show a real result made using the seller's own instructions — not an AI-generated image of what the finished product might look like.

Photo requirements got stricter too. Every listing must now include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Supplemental images can still use AI-assisted editing for lighting, color, cropping or backgrounds, but all photos must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive.

Takeaway: Etsy wants proof of the human hand — in the product and in the picture.

Is Etsy banning AI art outright?

No. The policy still allows AI-generated art when sellers play a clear creative role in its creation — say, a fantasy illustration built on the seller's own prompt and creative direction. Sellers must disclose when an item uses AI, and they can't pass AI-generated work off as handmade.

Bot-generated listings with no human involvement are explicitly prohibited. Etsy said violations will result in listing removal.

How will Etsy enforce it?

Etsy says it will alert sellers when it detects AI-generated images during the listing process, and it intends to provide guidance to help sellers meet requirements. Detection will expand to existing listings over time. Sellers whose listings get removed can appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager.

A new buyer-facing reporting option lets consumers flag listings they believe are AI-generated. One caveat worth noting: those reports won't trigger immediate enforcement. They'll initially inform Etsy's understanding of how buyers perceive AI misuse, with removal activity expanding in the coming months as detection tools improve.

Takeaway: enforcement today is mostly advisory; the teeth come later.

Doesn't Etsy use AI itself?

It does, and heavily. CEO Kruti Goyal described Etsy's AI strategy in August as focused on three areas: improving product discovery, delivering more personalized shopping experiences, and experimenting with agentic and conversational commerce.

"We see the biggest opportunity for AI on Etsy itself," Goyal said on the company's Q2 earnings call. "It's really about using AI to make Etsy much, much better at connecting the right buyers with the right sellers."

Etsy has partnered with OpenAI, Google and Microsoft on agentic commerce. It announced in January that it would sell directly through Google AI Mode, and it backs Google's Agent Payments Protocol. Goyal said in August that agentic AI experiences still account for less than 1% of Etsy's traffic — though referrals from AI channels carry higher buyer intent and average order value than typical traffic. In 2025, Etsy also rolled out AI-powered seller tools, including a writing assistant that mimics a seller's voice, bulk listing suggestions and AI-generated review highlights.

The split is deliberate: Etsy wants AI inside its own operations while fencing it out of seller listings where buyers expect human craft. How well detection scales to millions of existing listings will decide whether that fence holds.
