Golden Gate Petroleum launched Golden Gate Rewards on Monday, pairing a mobile app with a 2-cent-per-gallon fuel discount, 100 bonus points and a free drink for new members.

Golden Gate Petroleum developed both with loyalty platform Patron Points, according to the company’s announcement. The company says the program includes benefits for local customers and professional drivers.

What does the loyalty program offer?

Golden Gate Petroleum listed these member benefits:

  • A 2-cent-per-gallon fuel discount.
  • Points on purchases at the pump and in the store.
  • Product deals through the mobile app.
  • Beverage clubs that award a free coffee or fountain drink after 10 purchases.
  • 100 bonus points and a free drink for new members.

The company’s 2-cent-per-gallon discount amounts to 20 cents on a 10-gallon fill-up. That is the immediate saving. The broader economics depend on repeat visits. Simple math. Loyalty math is less certain.

Golden Gate is not alone in pursuing repeat business. Dive reported that c-stores face a slowdown in transactions, prompting many retailers to add or enhance loyalty programs and encourage repeat visits.

How does the Trucker Program work?

According to Golden Gate Petroleum, the Trucker Program has four tiers, with members advancing by the gallons they buy in a month. Higher tiers earn more points per dollar on diesel and in-store items.

The company’s announcement also lists:

  • Four points per dollar spent on fountain drinks, coffee and fresh food.
  • Three points per gallon of diesel exhaust fluid.

Convenience shoppers and professional drivers are not the same audience. Golden Gate is using one app to address both. That is the bet.

Randy Shores, marketing manager for Golden Gate Petroleum, said: “Professional drivers keep this country moving, and they keep our business moving too.” He added: “They shouldn’t have to go to a national chain to get a rewards program worth their time.”

Shores’s argument is straightforward: a regional fuel retailer can reward a high-volume fleet without sending drivers to a national chain. The tier structure reinforces that pitch with higher point rates at higher monthly gallon levels.

What does this change for drivers and convenience stores?

For professional drivers, Golden Gate Petroleum now offers a rewards structure built around monthly fuel purchases, diesel spending and in-store purchases. For convenience shoppers, the Golden Gate Rewards app adds pump and store points, product deals and a free-drink path after 10 purchases.

Golden Gate Petroleum operates more than 30 locations in California, Nevada, Colorado and Utah. Beyond gasoline, some sites offer car washes, bulk propane and foodservice from Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Port of Subs or Via Vita Pizza.

The launch fits a broader pattern. Dive reported that Golden Gate, Pony Express and United Refining, parent company of Kwik Fill, have launched new programs in the past few months, while Mickey’s relaunched its program.

The next test is whether these offers turn a slowdown in c-store transactions into repeat visits. Points are easy to launch. Repeat business is the point.
