Sales of label clips on Shopify jumped 606% in August, the single largest gain in the platform's monthly data, which Shopify shared first with Retail Brew. The back-to-school season hit its stride as parents moved from browsing in July to serious desk stocking in August.

The numbers show a clear sharpening of July's trends. Graphic calculators rose 56%, kids' desks rose 47%, desk calendars climbed 31%, and sticky notes gained 25%. July had already delivered an eclectic mix of school supplies and fall wardrobe items, according to the same Shopify data series, but August concentrated demand around the desk.

How far did educational toys climb?

Parents extended the learning theme beyond basic supplies. Planetarium sales rose 346%. Math toys gained 278%. Bug collecting kits climbed 102%.

The three categories point to spending on structured, at-home learning tools rather than general entertainment products. All figures come from Shopify's August data, shared first with Retail Brew.

Did outdoor categories hold on?

Summer spending had not ended. Shoppers pushed outdoor and fitness purchases ahead of cooler weather, and cycling led the way.

  • Bicycle lights: up 123%
  • Bicycle trainers: up 66%
  • Kids' bikes: up 53%

Late-season campers spent as well. Tent awnings and annexes rose 392%, emergency radios climbed 185%, and camping fire starters gained 180%. The tent-awning figure makes camping gear the second-strongest category group of the month, behind only school desk supplies.

What came next in apparel?

Fall wardrobe items posted sizable gains, mirroring the apparel signals already visible in July. Sweaters rose 84%. Pea coats gained 76%. Cardigans climbed 75%. School uniforms and knitwear rose 65%.

Some shoppers looked past fall entirely. Thermal sock sales jumped 60% in August, a purchase aimed squarely at winter.

What does this mean for merchants?

The August data confirms that back-to-school demand on Shopify concentrated in desk-specific and educational categories, with label clips' 606% surge the clearest marker of parents finalizing school preparations. Merchants selling cycling and camping gear still captured late-summer demand, with tent awnings up 392% proving the outdoor season extended deeper into August than the apparel numbers alone would suggest. The thermal sock gain of 60% signals that a segment of shoppers now plans seasonal purchases two seasons ahead, a pattern retailers can watch as fall inventory planning begins.
