At a glance

  • Nearly a quarter of brands sold in retail stores are now private labels.
  • Packaging manufacturers and designers have a bigger opportunity to participate in the growing private label segment.
  • Design partners can also help incumbent brands stand out against private label competition.

Nearly a quarter of brands sold in retail stores are now private labels, and that share gives packaging manufacturers and designers a bigger opportunity to participate in a growing segment — or help incumbents stand out.

The figure marks a shift in how retailers approach their store brands. Private labels no longer lean on imitation of national brands. They increasingly carry their own visual identities, treated as brands in their own right rather than cheaper alternatives.

For packaging suppliers, the implications are direct. A segment approaching 25% of brands on shelf represents substantial volume. Suppliers that can deliver distinctive design, structure and shelf presence stand to win work from retailers building out private label portfolios.

For established national brands, the same dynamic raises pressure. Private label packaging that projects its own identity competes harder on aesthetics and perceived quality, not just price. Incumbents will need packaging that differentiates more clearly against a store-brand set that no longer looks generic.

The opportunity spans both sides of the market. Packaging partners can help retailers launch and expand private label lines, or help national brands sharpen their differentiation as store brands claim more shelf space and design credibility.
