Sephora Hires Seth Rogen to Sell Beauty to People Who Can't Tell Serum From Setting Spray

Sephora's "We All Sephora" holiday campaign casts Seth Rogen as a baffled gift-giver, targeting beauty novices across TV, streaming and social in the U.S. and Canada.

At a glance

  • Sephora's "We All Sephora" holiday campaign featuring Seth Rogen rolls out Thursday across TV, streaming and social in the U.S. and Canada.
  • The ads run in 30- and 60-second versions and were created by agency Gut New York, directed by Jason Woliner.
  • LVMH's selective retailing segment, which includes Sephora, grew organic revenue 6% in the first nine months of the year.
  • Sephora teased the campaign by rebranding its The Grove store in Los Angeles as "Sethpora" last week.
  • Last year's holiday campaign featured Mariah Carey and Billy Eichner.

Sephora has cast Seth Rogen in its holiday campaign, aimed squarely at shoppers who need to buy beauty gifts and have absolutely no idea where to start. The retailer announced the push in a press release, and the full "We All Sephora" effort rolls out Thursday across connected and linear TV, streaming and social in the U.S. and Canada.

The strategic twist: Sephora is not courting its core base of in-the-know beauty enthusiasts this season. It built the campaign around gift-giving novices who want the guesswork removed.

What does this change for holiday beauty marketing?

It puts services, not products, at the center. The spots showcase in-store beauty advisers, and Rogen has curated a product list available on Sephora's app and website — a practical bridge for someone who couldn't name a serum if asked.

In the ads, running in 30- and 60-second versions, Rogen walks into a Sephora and immediately needs help from an assistant named Charlotte. He misunderstands setting sprays and calls pimple patches "face stickers." Charlotte corrects him and steers him toward gifts that will actually land — including matching red light LED masks he wears with his mom.

The casting logic is straightforward. Rogen, star and co-creator of "The Studio," brings humor and an approachable everyman quality, per the company. He also arrives with momentum: awards buzz for "The Invite," the A24 comedy he co-stars in alongside director Olivia Wilde, plus anticipation for season two of "The Studio," the acclaimed Hollywood satire he co-created, produces and stars in.

The Sethpora stunt

Sephora teased the partnership last week at its store in The Grove in Los Angeles, temporarily rebranding the facade as "Sethpora" and amplifying it through social posts. The ad closes on the same rebranded exterior. Agency Gut New York created the campaign, and Jason Woliner directed.

Celebrities are now a fixture in Sephora's holiday mix. Last year the LVMH-owned retailer paired with Mariah Carey on a campaign riffing on the inescapability of "All I Want for Christmas Is You," with Billy Eichner playing a disgruntled elf determined to ruin the seasonal cheer.

The business backdrop helps explain the confidence. LVMH reported strong Sephora growth across all markets in Q3, according to an earnings statement published earlier this month. Selective retailing, the segment housing Sephora, grew organic revenue 6% over the first nine months of the year.

Sephora isn't alone in chasing the uncertain gift-giver. Target's seasonal campaign is themed around a fictional academy whose departments and faculty specialize in categories like toys and value-friendly gifting — the same insight, different set dressing. For brands betting on Q4, the reluctant shopper appears to be this year's favorite customer.
