Walmart has opened a 900,000-square-foot fulfillment center in California to expand West Coast order capacity. The retailer announced the facility this week.

The site features an automated storage and retrieval system. Walmart says the technology increases order capacity and enables faster shipping to customers in the region.

What does the new facility change?

The California center joins Walmart's next-generation fulfillment network. Its 900,000 square feet of space house automation designed to move inventory faster than conventional warehouses can.

The automated storage and retrieval system is the core investment. It raises the volume of orders the site can process. That added capacity translates directly into shorter delivery windows for West Coast shoppers.

Why the West Coast matters

Walmart positions the facility as a regional capacity play. A dedicated West Coast node brings inventory closer to customers on that side of the country.

The company did not disclose headcount or a capital figure for the site. The stated goal is speed: more capacity, faster shipping.

The opening signals Walmart's continued push to automate fulfillment as it competes on delivery times with Amazon, which has spent years building out its own coast-to-coast logistics network of comparable scale and reach.
