August Retail Sales Data and NYFW Anchor a Busy Retail Week
The Census Bureau releases August retail sales Wednesday after July's 0.6% drop ended nine months of gains. Walmart and Nike anchor a packed NYFW week.

The US Census Bureau will release its monthly retail sales figures for August on Wednesday, giving retailers the first read on consumer spending since July's unexpected 0.6% month-over-month decline — the first drop for the measure in nine months, according to Census Bureau data.
The report lands mid-way through New York Fashion Week, where retail activity is spilling out of the runway halls and into downtown Manhattan. Walmart is running a Fashion Pop-Up in downtown Manhattan through September 20. SAP is hosting an event this week examining the future of the fashion customer experience. Rockefeller Center remains open to the public for live broadcasts of runway shows.
Away from Fashion Week, two invitation-only gatherings are betting that closed-door conversations beat keynote addresses for senior retail and brand executives.
Beanstalk arrives at Industry City in Brooklyn this week. The invite-only event targets founders, CEOs, and the C-suite of brands generating more than $10 million in revenue. Instead of keynotes and panels on a main stage, Beanstalk structures its program around executive meetings, power lunches, boardroom sessions, and private dinners. Major companies in attendance include Shopify, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Dyson, Away, and Bombas.
Total Retail Tech takes a similar peer-to-peer approach in Dallas, Texas, this week. The event brings together select retail executives in small-group settings and one-to-one meetings for what its website describes as "honest and open discussions about technology and other business challenges."
On the product side, Nike delivers the week's biggest launch. The first retail drop for Nike's new NBA Standard Issue Collection hits stores and online retailers on Tuesday. The collection targets both fans and players, and draws "inspiration from all aspects of the modern hooper's world, from the court and stage to movies, gaming, style and fashion," per Nike.
For marketers and retail executives, Wednesday's Census Bureau report will carry the most weight. After nine months of gains ended in July, the August numbers will signal whether July's decline was a one-month blip or the start of a sustained consumer spending pullback heading into the holiday season.
