75 Million Copies In, ACOTAR Is Retail's Newest Licensing Gold Rush

At a glance

  • ACOTAR has sold more than 75 million copies globally since 2015.
  • The sixth book, 'A Court of Splintered Harmony,' debuts Oct. 27; a seventh installment has been announced.
  • Target launched ACOTAR merchandise, including BrüMate and Alex and Ani products, on Oct. 11 with midnight release events.
  • Fine'ry reissued four fragrances with ACOTAR-inspired names and packaging on Oct. 11.
  • Knix debuts ACOTAR-inspired underwear, lingerie and sleepwear with five exclusive prints on Oct. 15.

A book series has moved 75 million copies since 2015, and retailers are treating that number like a merchandising mandate. "A Court of Thorns and Roses," Sarah J. Maas's romantasy flagship, publishes its sixth installment, "A Court of Splintered Harmony," on Oct. 27 — and the licensing calendar is already crowded.

The pattern is familiar. Barbie ran the collaboration playbook first, then "Wicked." ACOTAR is the next IP brands want attached to their shelves.

What's actually hitting shelves?

Three launches, three categories, all inside one week:

  • Target rolled out Courts-and-characters merchandise on Oct. 11, including BrüMate tumblers and Alex and Ani bracelets and earrings. Select stores will host midnight book-release events, and the retailer is offering a gift with purchase.
  • Fine'ry, the beauty brand, released "reimagined" versions of four existing fragrances on Oct. 11, with new names and packaging inspired by the series.
  • Knix debuts its collection on Oct. 15: leakproof underwear, lingerie and sleepwear inspired by ACOTAR characters, plus five exclusive Court-inspired prints.

So readers can now wear Prythian, spray it and drink from it. That's the point.

Why the franchise carries this much commercial weight

ACOTAR didn't just sell books — it powered the growth of the entire "romantasy" genre, the hybrid of romance and fantasy that has rewritten bestseller lists. Seventy-five million copies is roughly two full years of HarleHarlequin-level volume for a single author's world, and the fan base skews engaged, social and primed to spend on identity-adjacent products.

There's also more runway. The seventh installment was just announced, which means the audience won't cool off after Oct. 27. Franchises with visible futures are safer licensing bets than one-off hits, and brands evidently read that memo.

What does this change for marketers?

It confirms that licensed IP demand now migrates from screen to page. Barbie and Wicked were film properties; ACOTAR is a book series with no theatrical release driving this cycle — just publication dates and fandom. Retail media timelines now orbit book launches the way they once orbored movie premieres, midnight events and gift-with-purchase included.

For brand teams sitting on adjacency candidates, the signal is straightforward: romantasy readers buy beyond the book, and they buy fast. Target, Fine'ry and Knix got their timing from the calendar. The next franchise to replicate this will likely already have a release date circled.
