At a glance

  • Inserra Supermarkets opened an 85,000-square-foot ShopRite in Jersey City, N.J., in October 2026.
  • The store sits on the second floor of Everton, a 60-story residential tower at 99 Provost Street.
  • The new store is 20,000 square feet larger than the ShopRite of Metro Plaza it replaces.
  • Its refrigeration system halves the store's carbon footprint; EcoVision doors and EcoShine LED lighting cut energy use by more than 80%.

Inserra Supermarkets opened an 85,000-square-foot ShopRite on the second floor of a 60-story residential tower in Jersey City, New Jersey, the family-owned company announced.

The ShopRite of Hudson Exchange Place sits inside Everton, a new residential tower at 99 Provost Street. Doors opened at 7 a.m. with giveaways, followed by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. Members of the Inserra family greeted visitors, and local leaders joined the retail team for the ceremony.

The store replaces the ShopRite of Metro Plaza at 400 Marin Boulevard. It's 20,000 square feet bigger — roughly a 30% jump in selling space — and anchors the Hudson Exchange development taking shape in the heart of Jersey City.

Grand opening festivities ran longer than a single morning. The store hosted tasting stations from Oct. 14 through Oct. 18, plus a Singing Mozzarella Chef on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18.

What does the new store offer shoppers?

The format leans hard on fresh and prepared foods, Inserra's traditional strength:

  • Patsy's Butcher Shop and Antoinette's Kitchen, serving freshly prepared meals, a hot bar and a soup bar
  • A fresh bake shop, produce department, seafood department, sushi bar and full-service deli
  • ShopRite's Fresh to Table section with grab-and-go, ready-to-cook and ready-to-heat meal solutions

The location also breaks from typical supermarket service models in a few practical ways. A registered dietitian will offer nutrition counseling on site. Parking is ticketless through a mobile app, spread across two parking decks. Shoppers move through four passenger elevators, three escalators and two cart movers, and the store stocks Caper Carts — the smart shopping carts that ring up purchases as you go.

How much energy does the store save?

The sustainability specs are where this store gets genuinely specific. A refrigeration system cuts the store's carbon footprint by half, according to Inserra Supermarkets. EcoVision glass doors and EcoShine LED lighting throughout reduce energy consumption by more than 80%.

The company said high-efficiency heating and air conditioning plus water reclamation systems trim consumption further, with additional energy-efficient equipment reinforcing what Inserra calls its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

For grocers watching retail formats, the message is straightforward: Inserra is betting that a supermarket on the second floor of a residential high-rise — with half the refrigeration carbon and a fifth of the lighting energy draw — can outperform a conventional ground-level box. The 20,000 extra square feet suggest the bet isn't purely defensive, either.
