Uber Eats has added more than 375 Wakefern Food Corp. supermarkets to its delivery platform, giving Northeast shoppers on-demand access to eight grocery chains including ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace and Fairway Market.
Wakefern announced the partnership Tuesday. Shoppers can now order groceries through the Uber Eats app from Wakefern-affiliated stores that also include The Fresh Grocer, Morton Williams, Dearborn Market, Di Bruno Bros. and Gourmet Garage. Many of those stores are family owned and operated.
The catalog spans the full store. Customers can order produce, meat, seafood, pantry items, prepared foods and household goods for immediate or scheduled delivery.
Darren Caudill, chief sales officer at Wakefern Food Corp., said the partnership gives the cooperative's member stores another channel to reach customers.
"Uber Eats gives our stores another way to serve customers where they are, making it easier to get the fresh foods, neighborhood service and the value they count on with added speed and convenience," Caudill said.
The deal adds measurable scale to Uber's grocery operation. Uber has spent recent quarters adding national and regional supermarket chains across North America as demand grows for convenient options to buy everyday essentials.
Prashant Garg, head of North America for Uber Eats, said the addition addresses customer demand for flexible grocery shopping options.
Uber Eats is discounting first orders from participating Wakefern stores by up to 30%. Uber One members get free delivery on eligible orders.
For Wakefern's member stores, the move signals how regional cooperatives now treat third-party marketplaces as core infrastructure rather than a competitor threat. For Uber, a 375-store addition anchored by ShopRite strengthens its grocery position in the dense Northeast corridor, where Instacart and retailer-owned fulfillment networks already compete heavily.
