Four convenience store chains — Rutter's, Weigel's, Leo's and Sprint Mart — have upgraded their foodservice programs by hiring professionals from the restaurant industry, according to foodservice leaders at the companies.

The executives say bringing chefs out of restaurants and into c-stores can raise both the actual quality of the food and how customers perceive it. But they caution that the move comes with a learning curve for both the hires and the retailers.

Restaurant-trained chefs arrive with skills honed for a very different operating environment. Convenience stores run on speed, limited kitchen space and high-volume expectations that differ from a traditional restaurant setting. The food leaders said adapting restaurant discipline to c-store constraints is the central challenge of the transition.

The shift reflects the broader push by convenience retailers to compete with quick-service restaurants and capture foodservice-driven traffic, positioning prepared food as a margin and loyalty engine rather than a side category.

For Rutter's, Weigel's, Leo's and Sprint Mart, the bet is that culinary talent — even with a learning curve — delivers food quality that changes how shoppers see the channel.
