Wegmans Food Markets will build a refrigerated distribution facility in Rochester, New York, and consolidate operations from its oldest warehouse in a supply chain overhaul designed to reduce dependence on outside vendors and expand capacity.

The family-owned grocery chain announced Monday that the new facility will handle perishable goods, including produce, meat, seafood and prepared foods. Wegmans will also relocate its return center from its current Winton Road location to a new building in Rochester. Construction and opening dates have not been determined.

The Rochester-based grocer also plans to close its general merchandise distribution center on Winton Road and move those operations to its Pottsville, Pennsylvania, facility by spring 2027. The Winton Road site is the company's oldest leased distribution center.

Wegmans said no employees will lose their jobs because of the changes. The company employs about 52,000 people across 110 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

"Modernizing our network is essential to continuing to build a safe, more efficient and more resilient supply chain," Brian Olney, senior vice president of supply chain and food safety, said in a statement.

Colleen Wegman, president and CEO, said the investments would strengthen operations and support growth in the company's hometown market.

The privately held company has not disclosed the cost of the projects.

With the perishables facility, the return center relocation and the Pottsville consolidation all in motion, Wegmans is betting that tighter control over its distribution network will position the 110-store chain for further expansion in Rochester and beyond.
